2017: The Year Of Smartphone Diversity!

I remember the days when the talks of the smartphone of the year were easily narrowed down to the 2-3 devices, and there was usually a clear winner. Now…Ha! I am at the point that there is just no consensus on the best phone anymore.

When you break down the categories and different attributes of smartphones, you will pretty much never have a repeat phone in any category.

Now being in the Caribbean, we do not get exposed to the diversity of smartphone brands as other parts of the world. Which is a shame because our market here in the Caribbean identifies closely with the market in China & India (which happen to be the 2 largest smartphone markets in the world).

Big players like HTC, Sony, LG, have pretty much been relegated to an afterthought, sure they still make quality devices but nobody cares and that’s been reflecting in their sales since 2012.

Samsung & Apple remain the 1-2 punch in terms of numbers but it has become more about their marketing, status, and brand visibility than the actual quality of the product. That’s no knock to either of them, but definitely a nod to their marketing team.

We just live in a world now where you no longer need to spend the type of money required to get the latest and greatest from Apple & Samsung anymore. Do you want bleeding edge specs at half the price of the premium devices? Grab a Oneplus device. Do you want a bezeless device for $200usd? Grab the Doogee Mix 2. Want some of the best battery life ever put on a smartphone? Grab a Xiaomi Note 4x.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea. We have never had this amount of diversity, and we have never had the quality of devices at much lower price points than we did in 2017. All signs are pointing to an even better 2018, and manufacturers are going to really have to focus on being the best at 1 thing and good in the other areas than try to be the jack of all trades.

In the Caribbean, local support has always been the biggest reason why you might deal with a brand that has a local office here ie Samsung, Huawei. But this limits you, heck Huawei doesn’t even sell their incredibly popular Honor line of phones in the Caribbean. Now there are more retailers and online websites popping up with warranty, and as a consumer, you really need to do your homework and check out your options.

The best smartphone for you and your needs just maybe that device you have never heard about. So keep your eyes and mind open when checking out a new phone this holiday season. Ask as many questions, and be open-minded when checking out brands you might not have been too familiar with. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email or call.

Brands to check out: Doogee, Elephone, ZTE, Huawei Honor, Xiaomi, Oneplus, Oppo, Vivo, Smartisan, Lenovo, Gionee, Coolpad, Meizu, LeEco, 360, Umi.
