Android box resellers have been popping up like weeds and we are beginning to see the Android TV box scam take shape. Everyone is looking to cash in and sell you the dream of cutting cable but can this actually be done?
We break down 5 key points that tackle the Android box scheme and how you can guarantee a good device purchase.
What does “Fully Loaded” Mean?
Now on a regular basis when you are purchasing anything and someone tells you that the product is fully loaded and comes with all the bells and whistles, we can safely assume that whatever the product is, it will be coming with everything we could want and more.
In the case of Android boxes, that is not the case.
So why do these resellers promote a fully loaded box if it is anything but that?
It is not to mislead you, at least we would hope not but these boxes are coming loaded with a variety of apps. On average, any android box doesn’t matter the brand, will come with Kodi, Chrome, Video Player, Music Player, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Pandora, and Playstore.
Now, most people are purchasing an Android box with intentions of apps that will allow them to cut the cable and the only app listed above that aids in that goal is Kodi. I remind everyone that Kodi can be downloaded for free on Android, iOs, Windows, Linux and is an empty software that can be programmed in a variety of ways to play a variety of multimedia which for the most part still needs to be programmed when you receive the box.
So when you see a reseller selling a “fully loaded” Android Box, it usually won’t be coming with the apps you will be interested in with cutting cable.
What Exactly Are You Buying?
Well, an Android Box has so many uses that it would take us a separate article to outline the various uses of them. The boxes come in all shapes, sizes, specs, features, purposes, and it will be up to you to ultimately know what your needs are and ask the right questions so that you get a box that is right for you.
Android boxes are open source and there are a variety of apps that can be added to them. If you are buying from an experienced retail seller, they will be able to have programmed some good applications on them so that you will be able to watch on-demand movies, TV shows, live TV, screen mirroring, and much more.
Most, and yes I said most resellers in Trinidad are not taking the time to learn the Android platform on the whole in order to get the most out of these products.
They see it as a fad, something to cash in on and are ordering some of the cheapest boxes they can find online, stocking the shelves and selling it to you for double the price and having you figure things out on your own.
Most of our business comes from customers who purchased their boxes elsewhere, and now have to bring it for us to reprogram the so that you actually get the best use out of the box.
Resellers Not Programming Boxes
Now, because resellers in Trinidad & Tobago are cashing in on your lack of knowledge, most have become very lazy and don’t realise what you the customer are actually receiving.
If you are buying a box from a retail store who just ordered their boxes online, haven’t done any programming and selling you the box, you have an EXTREMELY high chance of receiving a box with applications that are out of date and need to be manually updated.
That will require you to download the latest versions of the apps, and install programs yourself. I have heard quite a few horror stories from customers and also see retailers on their Facebook pages telling customers their boxes don’t need to be programmed.
All I can say, is buyer beware.
Everyone is allowed to sell whatever they want to sell, but it is up to you to educate yourself and make sure you’re getting a good product that can do what you are looking to do.
The Price Difference
This is probably one of the biggest disparities right now; a retailer selling the same box but one is selling a box for $500 while the other is selling the same box for $700+.
What is the difference if the boxes are the same?
Well, from our own hunting and research, it comes down to what the individual retailer has done with the box. People usually selling boxes closer to the $400-$500 range are simply purchasing the box online and selling it to you without having done any of their own modifications, updates, additions to help you out in cutting the cord.
So when you purchase from these guys and you realise you are not getting what you want, especially when compared to what some of the good retailers are doing, you then now have to pay someone to reprogram your box which will run you $250-$400.
That still puts you in the ballpark of that $700 range but obviously with more headache as you now need to seek another company to assist you.
When it comes to Android boxes, you are mainly paying for someone’s knowledge of apps to program your box great, along with the actual hardware, all of which has different prices depending on what you are looking at.
Android Boxes Are Only As Good As the Programmer
Our last point makes a great segway into this last point we make to you.
When you go to a doctor or a mechanic, we can all agree that no two are alike and they all have a varying degree of knowledge in the field.
You can always find a cheap doctor or mechanic, but chances are they may not always have the right solution or correct information and then you still have to spend more money in the long run.
Android boxes in reference are only as good as the individual who programs them.
There is no right or wrong way to program a box as there are hundreds of applications that offer on-demand movies, TV series and live TV. We talk to a few good resellers and we often always exchange notes on why we program the box or use particular applications.
End of the day, we do what we feel is best and keep the customers in mind. We also like to see the customer’s faces after they have bought an Android box from someone who didn’t know much about them and we are now able to program their device, demo them, and show them how to get the most out of it.
As a consumer, make sure you ask questions, find out what apps are coming with the box, if they don’t want to list the apps or tell you the boxes do not need to be programmed, chances are they won’t be of much help to you as they may have just bought the device online to sell it to you directly.
