Android TV Box: How To Pick The Best Box!

With the sheer abundance of Android TV boxes on the market, both high end and budget devices, the average consumer enters a world where it gets confusing, and extremely quickly. No worries, the goal of this blog is to quickly educate you on the most important part when seeking out the budget Android TV boxes. We will leave the high-end devices like the Nvidia Shields and alike alone for another day.

So since we are addressing how to pick one of the budget boxes, there is 1 main thing that sets these boxes apart, and that is the CPU aka The Processor, the brain, the engine, whatever you want to call it but you get the reference and point being made.

So here in Trinidad & Tobago, you will see a wide variety of Android Boxes, the names hardly matter because they are always changing. What relatively remains the same are those CPU’s. The 2 most popular makers for the CPU’s on Android boxes are Amlogic & Rockchip.

They both make some excellent and cost-efficient chips to power these boxes, but this is where it gets confusing as there are some many versions of them, that users often do not know what is what. The most common CPU being sold in Trinidad is the Amlogic S905X. This chip does have some age to it at this point and there are some better chips available. Amlogic has also released the S905w which is a cheaper version of the S905x and the main difference is that the S905w does not play 4k 60fps but caps out at 30fps. To the avg person, that is not going to matter, but there is a difference in performance, the S905w does not have as much potential and will be limited with the upgrades to all the streaming apps.

So What Is The Best CPU Out

Currently, the best CPU on the market in the budget CPU space is the beast coming out of the Rockchip camp, the 3328. If you have had the pleasure of using a box that is running on the Amlogic S905x or S905w, than using a device running the Rockchip 3328, the fluidity and user experience is night and day difference.

Even if the box has 8gb of storage with 1gb of RAM, it has offered better performance than a box with 16gb & 2gb of RAM with an S905x CPU.

Add in the latest Android operating system 7.1.2, and you have a box that offers a great user experience at a very good price point. Right now, Rockchip currently has the best CPU out in the budget space with the 3399, but it is quite a difference in price for those who are just looking to stream movies and watch live TV.

Amlogic S905x vs Rockchip 3328

(Lower scores on the Antutu Benchmark test signal better performance, hence the Rk3328 is more powerful)

In Closing

Take a look at the specs, look for a box that has the Rockchip 3328 CPU and you would have a box that is going to offer you great performance over any box that is being powered by the Amlogic S905x/S905w.

I hope this helps you guys when you are buying your boxes locally or online. If you don’t know where to grab a box with the Rockchip 3328 CPU, we got you covered. Click the picture below and you can learn more about the MX9 Max which has the Rockchip 3328
