Digicel LTE Is Finally Here!

"Now Dat is LTE"

The Digicel launch event happened last week on July 16, even though the service has been active in for a few weeks. Consumers have been urged to update their SIM cards for the last few months to take advantage of the new speeds but also to experience the improvements made in the network with respect to signal quality and data consistency. So over the past couple weeks, I have received a bunch of questions and wanted to answer the most popular ones about the network.

The Top 6 Questions About Digicel LTE!

Most frequent questions and answers

What does LTE stand for?

LTE is an acronym for ‘Long Term Evolution’.

What is the max speed of the network?

According to Technical Director for Digicel Chandrika Samaroo, the network’s max speed is 75bmbps. This is of course lab testing results, real world usage will vary due to a variety of factors.

My phone has LTE in the states but not in Trinidad, why is that?

This can happen for a few different reasons. When you check out your phone on GSMarena.com, you will notice that their are a variety of different models per device. Each device has different antennas built for different networks around the world. In Trinidad, both Digicel & Bmobile use the Band 2 (1900) antenna for their LTE service. So while your phone might have other LTE antennas, if you do not have Band 2, it will not be able to pick up the LTE network in Trinidad & Tobago.

What do I need in order to access LTE in Trinidad?

You will need a few things in order to take advantage of the network. First, you will need a smartphone that carries the Band 2 (1900) antenna, an LTE Sim, the correct APN settings, and lastly, you will need to be within the LTE coverage areas.

If I can't get LTE, what is the max speed available on H+?

According to Technical Director, Chandrika Samaroo, the max rated speed for the H+ network on Digicel is 42.5mbps (lab tested). The usage in real world will vary due to different factors.

What are the benefits of having LTE?

There are several reasons why having LTE on your phone is a good benefit. It will all come down to how you use your phone but here are some of the top ways it will affect clients in Trinidad & Tobago. Faster web browsing, better streaming of HD video content (Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime), faster downloading speeds, better Whatsapp Call/Video quality, and less buffering for online gaming. For business owners with E-commerce websites, it allows for faster a faster response to your website while a client is browsing your site from their mobile device. That is just to name a few of the benefits that people should notice a difference in their day to day lives.
