Huawei is seriously gunning for the top spot with or without the US market. They have created a buzz in mobile that has been lacking in these recent days. I have said it before, I have a growing respect for Huawei’s design time. They have a penchant for making some amazing devices, with excellent designs and the price points, have always been good especially for their Honor series.
Today, I wanted to talk about the new P20 Lite. Yes we know the P20, P20 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche RS phones are what everybody will be running down for a variety of reasons but what about the everyday individual who wants a new phone with good performance, good camera’s, and a head-turning design.
Yes, yes we know Apple started something last year with their notch design but to me the notch makes sense. Every manufacturer copies from each other but as us techies will always say, copy the good stuff. The notch is definitely something that people will hate or like and for me, it’s growing on me. Why not eek out every bit of screen real estate you can, and maybe we get some more functions that can be done on either side of the notch over time.
The Huawei P20 Lite is a combination of a few phones. It embodies the look of the Honor 8 devices from over the past 2 years mixed with the display from the iPhone 10. The Honor series for me personally has really made some of the best-designed phones over the past couple years especially at the price points they go for.
The dual glass design with that reflective glass back and the colours will most definitely catch someone’s eye especially when someone catches a glimpse of the back of the device. Because it is glass on both sides, make sure you get yourself a tempered glass and a case to ensure maximum protection for your phone.
The Kirini 659 which is Huawei’s go to CPU for their mid-range devices has this device humming along. The CPU often gets compared to the Snapdragon 625 which was a very popular CPU due to its great balance of performance and battery life. This device can handle all of the everyday basic tasks like your social media, games that are not too graphics intensive, and multiple apps.
The phone packs a 3000mAh battery and with the Kirin 659, you should avg about 5hrs of the screen time with mixed usage. The phone also comes with Huawei’s quick charge technology that will allow you to get from 0% – 100% in about 90min. The phone also supports USB Type-C as well.
The P20 lite comes with a 5.84” IPS LCD display with a notch (the notch isn’t going anywhere so let us just embrace it). Colour reproduction is good, it gets decently bright, if you are outside in direct sunlight, you will have to crank the brightness. Average users will definitely appreciate the look and display on this device.
The P20 Lite sports a dual 12mp+2mp rear sensors with a F/2.2 aperture and a 16mp front selfie shooter. The camera app comes with a variety of modes like Pro, Night, Panorama, HDR and AR lens. Huawei’s mid-range cameras tend to be capable shooters at the price point and will get you some great shots under natural light and you will really have to focus when taking shots under low light conditions.
The P20 is rather familiar, it has similar specs to the Honor 7x and P Smart, with the design language of the Honor 8 mixed with iPhone 10. What you are a getting is a device that looks like it is a lot more premium than it actually is, with proven specs that will get the average user a great experience all the while looking like they spent top dollar on the device. The P20 lite goes for about $450usd and while the Honor 7x is probably a better value buy given the similarity in specs, it also doesn’t look the way the Huawei P20 lite does.
