The “Speed You Need” is the official slogan for the new Oneplus 6 and this statement could not be truer. The Oneplus has grown much from its days of being David and trying to take on the Goliaths in the game. Sure there have been some stumbles along the way to making what is arguably the best phone of the year thus far, but Oneplus has finally refined the device to make this a very appealing piece of hardware.
We are halfway through the year and have had a good bit of offerings from the giants in the game but outside of the P20 introducing the 1st triple camera smartphone, everything else seemed like minor refinements than groundbreaking new devices. Oneplus may currently have the best phone to purchase especially if you are here in the Caribbean and looking to get away from the norm. Here are my top 5 reasons why the Oneplus 6 is currently the best phone on the market.
1) The Best Specs For The Best Price
Now let us get this out here from the start, there are currently a few devices with a Snapdragon 845 CPU, 6/8gb and a lot of the features that the Oneplus 6 has. What most of those other devices don’t have (outside of the Xiaomi Mix 2s) is the price tag that this device comes with. Now throw in Oxygen O/S which is arguably a better stock version of Android than the stock O/s on the pixel devices, and the Oneplus makes it extremely hard to spend upwards of another $200 and up to get some of the other devices like the S9, P20, U12 or the G7.
I mean the Oneplus 6 is currently a faster device than every device I just listed, and that Oxygen O/S can be thanked for that. Sure the Oneplus 6 misses things like wireless charging and an official IP rating (it is splash resistant). Dash charging is still one of the fastest charging methods on the market and to be honest, give me 20min of Dash charging any day than any wireless charging method. The Oneplus 6 easily beats everybody on value.
2) The Display
We know Samsung is the champion of the displays, bar none, so it is fitting that the Oneplus 6 has been outfitted with 6.28” Full Optic AMOLED 1080p panel from…you guessed it, Samsung. I think it is safe to say that the consensus is this is the best 1080p panel on the market right now. It also boasts an 84% screen to body ration and has the design flaw, I mean feature of 2018, the notch. Sure Quad HD would have been nice but I have realized more and more people get devices that have Quad HD panels and forget to even switch it to Quad HD. This will definitely save on your battery consumption, so it shouldn’t be too big of a worry for most people.
3) Software & Performance
No gimmicks, No nonsense, No bs, No heavy skinning, no bloatware…the software is a fresh breath of Oxygen (see what I did there lol). Oxygen O/S is stock Android with the right additions to make it better than stock Android. The O/S is smooth, and guess what folks, NO LAG!!!! You won’t even see a micro lag on this thing. Add in the Snapdragon 845 and 8gb of RAM, there is no chance in hell you will be able to slow this device down. As a bonus, Google announced that the Oneplus that will be one of the few devices to get the Android P beta software and is currently available to download. This is even better news and may be a sign for the future when Google launches official Android P officially, Oneplus may be first in line for a download to get some of those features that Google usually reserves for the likes of Pixel & Android One devices.
4) Battery Life & Dash Charging
The Oneplus 6 comes with a 3300mAh battery, which is pretty standard for the most part. With the battery efficiency of the Snapdragon 845 and Oxygen O/S software optimizations, this device will more than get you through a full day on a single charge. If you do manage to do some heavy video streaming or video recording, Dash Charging is here to rescue you. It’s currently one of the fasting charging technologies on the market that takes you about 30 min to get to 50% charge and less than 80 min to get to 100%.
5) The Camera
The OP 6 has a 16mp main sensor and a 20mp secondary sensor tasked with handling the bokeh effect. Oneplus has finally added the one feature that every smartphone enthusiast has been begging the smartphone Gods for…OIS. The added larger pixels on the main sensor allow for a vastly improved camera experience in low light situations. They have also added 480fps slo-mo and will be adding an AI-based portrait mode to help step your selfie game up. The accuracy of colours, the clarity, and when compared to some of the other more expensive devices on the market, the OP6 shows that it belongs right there in the conversation with the top cameras.
To Wrap Up
With smartphones getting better and cheaper, the question the OP6 has me asking myself AGAIN…are the more expensive devices seriously better than the Op6? And are they $300usd+ better than the Op6?
The gap in terms of performance, build quality, features has been effectively closed. Now the super premium devices on the market are going to have to do so much more to justify whether their devices are $300usd better than devices like the Op6. My answer is simple…No. There may be a specific reason you may pick up a Pixel, a Note, an iPhone, but for me, there have to be specific reasons at this point, otherwise, it’s just a waste of money.
Oneplus 6 is inching their way to creating the perfect smartphone and I believe they may reach there before anybody else. If they can manage to give us stereo speakers, wireless charging, an official Ip rating for below $550usd, in conjunction with everything they are doing right now. That will officially be the Oneplus that truly “Never Settles”.
