The Chinese OEMs Lead The Way In Smartphone Innovation!

It’s a bold statement, but as we begin to put this into context, you will see that the Chinese have taken over as the leading innovators in the realm of Smartphones. In a time where all of the reigning heavyweights feel like they are only making incremental updates over previous generations of their handsets, companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oneplus have been hard at work with giving us some really great innovative offerings.

The Huawei P20 Pro and Mate Porsche RS are the first smartphones with triple camera sensors, and the Mate RS has the inscreen fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi has figured out how to give the top specifications on the market at the lowest prices possible in a device like the MI 8 and even the MI Mix series gives a valiant effort in the war against bezels on full body screen ratios.

Vivo has dropped an industry first with the Nex S, with a whopping 91% screen to body ratio, a motorized selfie camera, turning the entire screen into an ear speaker, and also sports an inscreen fingerprint sensor.

Oneplus has given us the new Oneplus 6. When you combine the Oneplus 6 with Oxygen O/S, you get one of most powerful devices on the market at a price tag starting from $520usd.

When you look at what we have gotten from the old stalwarts in HTC, Samsung, LG, and Apple we see incremental upgrades over previous generations. Samsung sits in a relatively safe zone due to its brand presence in major markets like the US and carrier support it enjoys that most companies are no longer getting. Apple also rests on its laurels that there is no real competition as they are the only suppliers of the iOS platform.

2018 is the year the Chinese OEMs have finally come into their own and are starting command real respect in the market. Xiaomi, in particular, has arguably made the closest attempt to the perfect smartphone.

Now, there is no perfect smartphone, let us just get that out the way. But when you break down what Xiaomi has achieved with the MI 8, a powerful device, excellent design (even if it is iPhone inspired), at the price tag that is at half the cost of the S9 plus and over devices. You are getting these years top CPU in the Snapdragon 845, an excellent camera that DxO mark has rated better than the S9, great battery life, a top-notch 1080p Super AMOLED panel, starting from $420usd.

Whatever you feel like the MI 8 is missing can be forgiven to the price tag, and there isn’t much that the smartphone is missing.

We are at a point that spending over $500usd on a smartphone is becoming a real head-scratcher, given what we have seen from Xiaomi, ZTE and Oneplus. I urge everyone to really try to understand mobile technology and understand your needs and what device you really need to solve your needs.

There may be reasons why you need a device that goes over the $500usd mark, and that’s perfectly fine if it is the device that solves challenges in your life. The great news is that most people, given the power of devices like the Oneplus 6 and Xiaomi MI 8 will never ever need more than what these 2 powerhouses are offering.

So how do you guys feel about the current state of smartphones, have the Chinese OEMs closed the gap or surpassed the heavyweights on innovation or do they still have a ways to go? Let me know in the comments.
