The Xiaomi Mi 6x – 2k18 Mid Range King?

When it comes to producing quality devices, on a budget, Xiaomi is the undisputed king. As a matter of fact, I am always wondering how Xiaomi is able to make the devices they do and offer the specs that they offer for the prices they retail their devices for.

It’s a head-scratcher, especially when you realize how much they undercut the competition by and not compromising on the quality. Until they announced that the will be capping their profit margins to 5% for the next…forever.

That means they are committing themselves to high-quality devices at some ridiculously good prices. They have realized, if selling more expensive phones nets the same profits as cheaper devices, might as well make the best phones within particular budget points and sell volume.

Which brings me to the new creation out of the Xiaomi factories, the Mi 6x. I am not going to lie to you when I first heard the specs on the device, I kind of giggled in anticipation for the price of the phone. Then when I heard the pricing, I had to remind myself that this was Xiaomi, and great pricing is what they have built their company off of.

The Mi 6x packs the powerful Qualcomm 2.2ghz Snapdragon 660 CPU, with 32/64/128gb storage and 4/6gb variants respectively. It sports a 5.99” 1080p x 2160 IPS display with the new aspect ratio of 18:9. It has a dual camera set up of 20mp+12mp, and a selfie camera with 20mp for those detailed selfies. You also got Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, Quick charge 3.0, a 3010mAh battery, FM Radio and comes in Pink, Red, Gold, Blue and Black for your colour options.

Artificial Intelligence Camera:

The cameras on the Mi 5x last year were touted by Xiaomi as flagship level cameras, and while the term flagship is a bit vague, and wouldn’t stand up to say the Pixel 2, S8, and the P10 from last year, the cameras were easily the best in its class.

This year, Xiaomi has upgraded the cameras even more. The selfie camera is a 20mp Sony IMX376 sensor with f/1.75 aperture and fixed focal length, that will allow it to provide a focus for those precious selfies.

The dual cameras on the back feature a 12mp Sony IMX486 sensor with an f.175 aperture and 1.25-micron pixel size and the second lens are the exact same as the selfie camera but just with 1-micron pixel size. What all of this jargon means is that on paper, you have a very good setup to get great shots, and it should have a good chance with getting some shots in low light situations, providing you know what you are doing.

The artificial intelligence is used for scene recognition. The camera software will identify what the object is and change the settings to give you the best possible picture.

The Mi 6x packs an IR blaster, is the only phone in this price segment with USB Type C and Bluetooth 5.0, offers face unlock, the headphone jack has been removed but will come with the adapter in the box, and also has an AI-powered translation, to translate text from other languages.

The Mi 6x starts from $250usd for the base model, to $320usd for the top end model. These prices are of course the costs before it lands in our beautiful country of Trinidad or any other country you decide to import this device too.
